Heritage Academy is a public charter school, in Jerome, Idaho. The school opened in 2011 after a group of parents worked with educators to design a school that allowed students to build upon their strengths and interests. Heritage is a unique school of choice designed to meet the educational needs of the children in the Magic Valley. Students attending Heritage focus on standards-based instruction and enrichment activities that allow them to create authentic products and services in areas of personal interest. Since opening, our enrichment clusters produced many outstanding products and services. Some examples include: publishing a coloring book; building several outdoor benches; writing and producing a musical; starting a bully-free squad; starting a school garden and designing catapult systems used for a variety of school projects. Our students thrive when they are working on interest-based projects. We are excited to continue our schoolwide enrichment program and add more opportunities for community involvement during the upcoming years.
The school serves approximately 200 students in kindergarten through eigth grade. There is no tuition at Heritage and anyone can enroll. Ninety-five percent of students from Heritage are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches, and twenty-five percent of our students receive services designed for children with disabilities, medical challenges and/or English as a second language.
In addition to our clusters, students learn about key character traits, develop mindsets that help them succeed in life and develop an appreciation for the people around them. They practice showing respect and kindness to those with whom they interact. As a school, we celebrate examples of showing good character and we recognize students who are responsible citizens; kind and caring individuals and hard workers. We believe that by recognizing these traits, and building in opportunities for serving others, we are helping develop tomorrow’s employees, parents, friends and community leaders.
Heritage Academy demonstrates academic success by achieving all measures from its charter and current performance certificate except the ISAT proficiency goal. The table below provides an overview of the school’s academic achievement.

|Implementation of the Integrity Initiative||Yes||Yes|
|% Proficient After Continuous Enrollment||84%||Yes|
|% Below Grade Level After Continuous Enrollment||16%||Yes|
|ISAT Proficiency After Continuous Enrollment – ELA/Literacy||Not able to measure due to changes in State assessment system.|
|ISAT Proficiency After Continuous Enrollment – Math|
Currently 84% of primary grade students who have been continuously enrolled at Heritage Academy score proficient or “benchmark” on the Idaho Reading Indicator (IRI). Longitudinal data show steady gains in whole class IRI data as students move from kindergarten through first, second and third grade. Heritage Academy’s kindergarten classes have consistently started with 55-60% of students scoring basic or below basic on the fall IRI. This indicates a significant portion of our kindergarteners come to school without school readiness skills and beginning literacy skills. In addition, 78% of students score below grade level on the IRI the first year of enrollment at Heritage Academy. These data are encouraging to Heritage Academy stakeholders because they show the tremendous growth achieved through high quality instruction and intervention received by students in our school.
Engage NY is a standards-based curriculum with modules in mathematics marked by in-depth focus on fewer topics. They integrate the Idaho Core Learning Standards, rigorous classroom reasoning, extended classroom time devoted to practice and reflection through extensive problem sets, and high expectations for mastery. Heritage Academy is using Engage NY Math for all math instruction in grades K-8.
Heritage Academy utilizes the Core Knowledge Language Arts program. CKLA is a comprehensive, preschool through fifth grade program for teaching reading, writing, listening, and speaking while also building students’ vocabulary and knowledge across essential domains in literature, global and American history, and the sciences.
With the updated math and ELA programs in place, teachers and student have a greater opportunity to achieve and exceed proficiency standards in all areas of instruction. Heritage Academy continuously monitors individual student progress in these areas and teachers provide intervention for students not exhibiting adequate growth.

We will accomplish this by establishing high expectations, integrating enriched learning strategies for all students, and by promoting home, school and community partnership.
Using the Schoolwide Enrichment Model, Heritage Academy will educate students, leading them to develop meta-cognitive skills. In a safe and respectful environment, these skills will allow them to learn how to organize information and solve real-life problems. Our students will graduate with skills in both the core content areas and in critical thinking that will lead to success in school, in the workforce, and in the community.
