Heritage Academy Board of Directs Statement on the COVID-19

Heritage AcademyNews & Events

March 14, 2020

Dear Heritage Academy Families,

We want to assure you that your child(ren)’s safety, health and academic growth are the top priorities of our school board, superintendent and staff members.

Novel Coronavirus, known as COVID-19 is causing great concern in our community, a concern that Heritage Academy is working to address daily.  In response, we have been in regular communication with the Idaho State Department of Education (SDE), US Department of Education: Home, South Central Public Health District.  We are also referring to guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to base our planning to respond to the spread of COVID-19 on the most recent tracking of the disease and the latest science that has been reported on the disease.

At this time, the risk in Idaho is still very low.  Our Board of Directors, in consultation with our Superintendent and staff members are taking the following initial steps to address concerns:

  1. Parent teacher conferences (kindergarten-4th grade) will be held on Tuesday, March 17th instead of Wednesday, March 18th.  Conference times are the same as those scheduled on Wednesday for each student. Parents may choose to attend conferences at school or by phone.
  2. Middle school student-led conferences are cancelled.  Parents may contact Mrs. Heil (Middle School Team Leader) or Ms. Higgins to schedule a phone conference.
  3. School is cancelled, for students, on Wednesday March 18th and Thursday March 19th.  This cancellation is to allow the staff time to develop a plan for potential long-term emergency closure.  While we hope that a long-term closure will not be necessary, we will be reviewing current SDE and USDOE regarding technology-based instruction, services for students with disabilities, child nutrition services, along with any new recommendations regarding response to COVID-19.
  4. We expect to resume school, as planned, on Monday March 30th.  We will communicate any changes to that plan as quickly as possible.

We encourage you to follow the recommendations from the CDC to avoid the spread of all contagious illnesses. What every American and community can do now to decrease the spread of the coronavirus

Please feel free to contact your child(ren)’s teacher(s) or Dr. Ivie with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

The Heritage Academy Board of Directors

  • Please understand that Heritage Academy is making science-based decisions regarding school closure and COVID-19
  • Dr. Ivie is attending regular, often daily, conference calls with the Idaho Department of Education and Department of Health and Welfare regarding schools and COVID-19.  These calls include very specific, current information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regarding the situation in our state.
  • The upcoming closure (March 18th and 19th) is for the purpose of developing a long-term emergency closure plan, in the event that such a closure is necessary.  In a very small school/district, our staff members wear multiple hats.  This makes it difficult for all necessary staff members to meet and plan (because most teach during the day). In larger districts, with individuals serving as full-time program coordinators, planning can occur during the regular school day, while students are attending class.
  • The CDC, Governor’s Office and Idaho Department of Health and Welfare are urging schools to consider the following when making school closure decisions:
    • CDC School Closure Guidance
    • The risk to children is low (unless a child is immune compromised)
    • School closures have not been successful in limiting the spread of Coronavirus in other states and other countries
    • If schools close, there is a potential negative impact on students’ academic growth, access to school nutrition programs and access to school-based programs that assist students with a variety of challenges.
    • If schools close, there is a potential negative impact on access to adequate health care, as many health care professionals may need to stay home to care for children.
  • The Heritage Academy Board of Directors and staff members will meet as often as necessary to make decisions that are focused on our students’ and their families’ health, safety, academic success and well-being.

Sinceramente

La Junta Directiva de Heritage Academy
